I finished building the desk this weekend. It felt good to be covered in dust and sweat and drilling shit.
No, really, I'm not kidding.
I was horrified to learn that IKEA was sold out of the Black Expedit 5x5 shelving unit almost everywhere across America. This pretty much ruined my entire office layout. I've been battling with what to do with the wall that is primarily measured and designed with this piece of furniture as its center point and I might have come to a solution. I still need to measure it out, but I'm sure it will come together.
It then came time for the opposite wall where the other desk was to be located. I played with the idea of using my Crate and Barrel desk and I might do so until my tax return money comes in. Otherwise I am looking at this desk.
We'll see how it all measures out.
I also decided to use the Hemnes series of shelves for this wall. I could create an alcove for the desk under one of their bridge shelves between two narrow shelves and then use the larger units for the rest of the wall. Due to the lack of expedits, I may not have as much shelf space as I had anticipated so I'm having to improvise. The nice think about the Hemnes series is that its another 6 or so inches taller than the Expedit. I'll take what I can get.
Anyway, I transferred my Mac Pro to the new desk setup. It was an easier transition than I had expected. I had all of the wire lengths correct and there were no issues with any other aspects. I'm going to install lighting below the desk so that I don't have the use the harsh desk lamp to install new components.
All right, it's late, and I'd like to get some reading done tonight. I'm currently stepping away from fantasy ( kind of? ) and reading "Boneshaker" by Cherie Priest. Steampunk Sci-Fi Horror? Yes, please.
Cheers,
Eric
